Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics

Jakarta, 1975

The painting titled Tanjung Priok was created by S. Sudjojono, one of Indonesia’s foremost painters, in 1975 and depicts the Tanjung Priok Port, the largest and busiest port in Indonesia located in North Jakarta.

S.Sudjojono is renowned as one of the maestros of Indonesian painting. He was also a pioneer and founder of the Indonesian Association of Painters (Persagi) in 1937, which marked the beginning of modern Indonesian painting. His works are characterized by an expressive style, focusing on nature, community life activities, and culture.

The painting titled “Tanjung Priok” is one of Sudjojono’s works in an expressionist style. It depicts the atmosphere of Tanjung Priok Port in the 1970s, showcasing the presence of many traditional ships in a modern port setting. This painting captures the essence of maritime culture in Indonesian port cities. Nowadays, traditional ships no longer operate at Tanjung Priok and have shifted to the Sunda Kelapa Port on the western side.

In 2014, Sudjojono's artwork featured in the Masters of Modern Indonesian Portraiture exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, the capital of Australia. This exhibition celebrated the richness of Indonesian painting traditions and spotlighted significant modernist pieces from the 1930s to the 1980s.
